Hawaii Competency Based High School Diploma Program (CBASE)

In partnership with the Department of Education, SWCC provides the CBASE program which enables adults who do not have a Hawaii high school diploma a valid process to obtain a high school diploma through the network of community schools for adults.

The purpose of the CBASE Program is to empower adult learners to become

  1. Functionally literate
  2. Productive and contributing members of the community
  3. Effective family members
  4. Productive workers

The curriculum is aligned to the adult learner standards and the contextual activities are designed to help adults become functionally competent individuals in the following areas:

  1. Community Resources – identifying and learning to access educational, governmental and recreational resources and services available to community members
  2. Consumer Economics – learning basic principles of money-management and wise consumer decision-making
  3. Government and Law – understanding the concepts of individual rights and responsibilities through the study of governmental agencies, functions and regulations
  4. Health – learning about the importance of maintaining good mental and physical health and wellness
  5. Occupational Knowledge – obtaining information and skills necessary for gainful employment and good work habits

 

The classes are offered tuition-free to eligible students but students are required to purchase educational materials at minimal costs. The entire program takes approximately one year to complete.
