As part of the 2011 National Tree display at President’s Park in Washington D.C., Susannah Wesley has been chosen to take part of the display by designing and creating ornaments for the State of Hawaii’s tree. Organized by the National Park Foundation, the National Christmas Tree Lighting is one of America’s oldest holiday traditions, with its beginnings dating back to 1923 with President Calvin Coolidge. This tradition, having evolved over time, now includes selecting a local artist and youth from each U.S. state, territory and the District of Columbia to design and create 24 ornaments. Twenty-three ornaments will be hung from the designated state tree with one ornament being selected to be showcased on the White House Visitor Center Christmas tree along with the ornaments from all 56 states, territories and DC.
